Upright pianos are often also referred to as vertical pianos, for obvious reasons, and are very popular pianos for piano players – especially whereplaying space is an issue. An upright piano is more compact than other types of pianos and is good for smaller spaces. It is popularly believed that the original upright piano was designed and created by Johann Schmidt who came from Salzburg, Austria. It is then believed that in 1802 Thomas Loud from London improved Schmidt’s upright piano design by creating the first upright piano to display the diagonally running strings.
Besides the obvious design of an upright piano they also differ on the inside. The frame and strings in an upright piano run vertically, rather than horizontally like in a grand piano. The parts of an upright piano include:
- The Top
- The Upper Panel
- The Music Rack (which holds the sheet music)
- Fall (the part which covers the keys)
- Keyboard
- The Bottom Panel
- And Pedals
Upright grand pianos are different to normal upright pianos in that the frame is considerably longer to accommodate longer strings. The heights of different upright pianos represent different characteristics and therefore different sounds from the piano.
